this is the Joondanna Catholic Church by Ernest Rossen. very nice, hugley tall church, with some pretty obvious corb touches. check the entry canopy, the door artwork. whoa! ronchamp! whoa! its like really big. and its gott cool beans clerestories so you get that awesome high lighting in hte fron of the church. DIVINE! anyways, enjoy.

this is the next in the series of churches i have loked at recently and are quite important in hte wider perth context. this is the Yokine Anglican church by Julius Elischer, 1971. really nice, suburban scaled church. i love the way it unfolds, with the walls gradually cranked to create vertical light slits, and it creates a wonderful jagged roofline, and form. its lookin a little worse for wear, but nothin a good lick o paint couldnt fix. really really nice. simple, elegant and bold. hellz yeah.

these are more randoms… top one is on haverlock st i thinki n west perth, really nice sliding geometry, aggregate panels, hidden glazing, and industrial aesthetic. next down dunno, but really brutal, and lovely juxtaposed brickwork and glazing panels. so rough, so crisp! the reflection of the sky is genius. also the way its floats above the ground plane.  last one is on the corner of ord st, west perth, pretty choice bro. monumental, demented bay window like jewels, kinda reminiscent of rmit 8 in melbs. sick.

GW FINN, for the PWD 1960, Under AE CLARE. dreamboat. this building astonishes me. the geometric hourglass plan, and elevation, combines to create the most interesting and ever changing perspectival building. as you walk around it, it changes from a 3d dimensional object, and suddenly becomes a flat 2d face, sliding across the ground plane. uncomprehendably brilliant. almost made me want to give up architecture it is so blindingle amazing. the use of mosaics(influnce from his south america trip) as well as brazilian modern shaping. also hte use of white edging around the faces, particularly emphasises the geometric planes, and fluctuating dimensionality. It makes the building flatten to a white outline, with infill. so many levels. 3d object, with a 2d outline, 2d object in a plane, etc etc. words cant really describe.jaw drop.

JIDGE!

this is a long time favourite of mine. im not quite sure why, i just saw it and fell in love. its in pier st, just down from dadas, its like a youth/homeless/aa/ freako joint, scary to go inside, but worth it. Pity its not been kept in great condition. it looks like pwd, (finn, clare?) particularly the use of baby blue mosaics on the entry columns, and the exposed aggragate panels. very strong floating panel, and the way it flies off at a tangent to the sloping street is genius. nice subtle brick striations, emphasising the horizontality. the way the two contrasting halves slide over each other, with the intermediate glazing releif is just poetry. yeah!

p4190066.jpgp4190068.jpgp4190067.jpgthis is absolutely gorgeous. really strong forms, high wa modernism, withnice proportioning, and an excercise in restraint. not sure who, but have heard around the traps it wa ferguson for pwd?? im probs way wrong, so sorry.. anyways, grouse.

OH! and it features my favourite typeface of all time, the (pwd??) one, used all over perth, and i have no idea what it is. some one? srsly, i would have this typefaces kids. post mo’ later
