This Tuesday, the 19th of July is the next edition of Perth Samplings at the Bakery. Great line up of young architects, including yours truly! The topic is advocating architecture, Clare Wohlnick and I will be speaking about The Weather Ring and a few other bits. Jennie Officer, Carly Barett and Beth George are also speaking.

Raymond Jones Exhibition

Following on from the previous series of exhibitions held at the UWA Cullity Gallery in the 90s, including works by Howlett, Summerhayes and Krantz & Sheldon, is a new exhibition focusing on the architectural projects of Raymond Jones. The exhibition runs from Tuesday March 22 – April 8, and includes a selection of work from 1952-today. A catalogue will be available from the front counter.

Perth Samplings 11

Monday 21st of Feb, at the Bakery, is the first Samplings of the year. Neil Appleton from Lyons will be discussing their cracker of a building, the new TAFE in Northbridge, as well as other works by the practice. Unmissable!

Northlands Tavern

This is the Northlands Tavern in Nollamara, designed by Silver, Goldberg and Assoc. in the early 1970s. Interesting little tavern, with a circular plan, punctuated by brick cylinders at regular intervals on the perimter walls, similar to the Baker house by Boyd. The roof structure is then telegraph poles bolted together. Internally the roof trusses are exposed, making a dramatic internal space.

State Theatre

This is the new State Theatre, completed this year by Kerry Hill Architects. I won’t say much, apart from it is a great building. I was a bit skeptical at the beginning of the process (especially when E&C didn’t win the comp!!!) but am satisfied with the outcome. I have never been much of a fan of Kerry’s work, but I went through the other day, and it is a truly remarkable building. The finishes, materials, spatial qualities etc are all spot on. Of course there are flaws , but I don’t they detract significantly from the overall scheme to bother over. I am just happy its done, and its good.

Toodyay Church

So this isn’t in Perth, but its a cracking building, so enjoy. Toodyay Church, designed by Summerhayes in 1962. Beautiful modern church, with an exceptionally thin roof, and ‘thick’ walls. The full height glazing set back in the openings, gives the walls an appearance of being particularly thick and ‘flat’ . The walls use local bricks with flecks of green and purple throughout the mix that really liven the building up. Great staircase inside as well.
