This is the Curtin New Technologies Building at Curtin University designed by Philip Cox Etherington Coulter and Jones in 1994. The photographs for this post were taken by Rob Frith at Acorn, and they are just amazing. Strong striated brick patterning and bold geomteric forms create a fantastic building. Thanks Rob.

This is the Playhouse theatre in Pier St. Perth. It was designed by Krantz and Sheldon in 1956. Iwan Iwanoff painted a mural inside, but I believe this is now gone. Beautiful, modern theatre and interesting to see an example of K&S work that is not an apartment building.

These are the Lisle and Leaweena Lodges in Mt Claremont designed in 1978 by Julius Elischer. They are aged person units in a village type arrangement. The village is full of twists and turns, different views and vistas are around each corner, and the use of retaining walls allows for fantastic changes in level throughout the development. Very mediterranean in the imagery and use of materials.

This is St. Augustine’s church in Bayswater. It was designed by Kenneth Broadhurst in 1957, or thereabouts. Great modern domestic scaled church, with a very strong geometric plan, a rough half hexagonal shape, and fantastic fenestration patterns.

This is an addition to an office block originally designed by Howlett and Bailey. The addition was designed by Louise St John Kennedy with Frank Cardinale, Paul Odden and Colin Anderson. The strong folded marble entry canopy is the main feature, and the detailing on the footpath/entry is beautiful. White marble with concrete infill. Elegant urbanism.

This is the Marshall Clifton house, also designed by him. It is from 1937. It is one of his few spanish style houses, the other notable example being the Day house. It is however the style that most associate with him. An architecture that he saw as appropriate for our location. The exterior of the Clifton house is in very good condition, as compared to the Day house. The interior however has been transformed beyond recognition apparently. Excellent and vital piece of West Australian architecture.

This is an ANZ bank in West Perth, designed by Donaldson + Warn in the early 90s.  A very strong assemblage of urban forms and devices. Sun screens are used very effectively, and figure highly in the composition. The steel framed colonnade set off from the main building , creates a well articulated space for pedestrian access and defines the building on the west side.

This is an Iwan Iwanoff in Coolbinia. I would estimate it is a late 50s, early 60s example. Similiar approach to siting as the Golovin house, which rises against the slope,   and the same large single pitch roof is used. The entry detail, a curved semi enclosed portico, protruding out the side of the building is great. Quite a large project, so I assume additions have been made.
