Marsala house

sfsfsaaapb170359pb170362pb170360This is the Marsala house in Dianella designed in 1976 by Iwan Iwanoff. It is amongst the most inventive and original houses in Perth, and Australia.  The way it interacts with the surrounds, the shadows that are created and  how it responds in our light, is perfect. It belongs in WA, nowhere else. Truly a masterpiece.

I almost got my hands on this baby once, some clients were thinking of buying it. The interior is almost original, it has a DISCO! It is the greatest building in the world (though the interiors are a little dark). If they had bought this place I would have offered to work for free.

  2. Perhaps you should pay a visit to Northam and photograph their library and town hall, part of an Iwanoff development. Unfortunately the other stages never came to fruition.

  3. We have just had the roof and skylights replaced, this has helped to lighted up the interior.
As anyone who has driven past lately would have found out, there is some pretty major exterior maintenance work being performed.

    • Hi Mark

You suggested that the Iwanoff buildings in Northam were incomplete – what’s missing? Have you further information?, I’d be appreciate any input regarding Northam’s Library and old Council Chambers.

  8. ive been lucky enough to have been inside a few of the iwanoffs including marsarla house, its enormous, the 70s disco is so cool. it also had a round sunken dining room pit but was filled in with corcrete by a previous owner bcause aparently acouple of guests fell down it while looking up at amazement at the interior. the house is also known as ”city lights” as they are visible at nite from the balcony. i also just want to say, i wish people wouldnt paint them!!!
